Romans 6:22-23 //  But now that you have been set free from sin and have becomes slaves of God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness and the result is eternal life.  For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Salt of the Earth t-shirt June 26, 2015 09:00

We love the Salt of the Earth tee featuring Matthew 5:13.  It's a good reminder that as believers, we have the chance to flavor life with God's love, joy, and kindness just as salt flavors and enhances food.  We are called to preserve the values of God, just as salt preserves food.  Go into the world and be salt.

use your God given gifts May 06, 2015 09:00

At Shine Your Light, we believe in encouragement. And we want to encourage you to live a life filled with purpose. We want to encourage you to live out the gifts God has given you and to use every last drop of that talent.

Sometimes you might not be sure about what gifts you have or how to use them, and that’s okay. Sometimes you know your gifts, you have ideas for how to use them, and yet you hold yourself back. We want to encourage you to just start. God doesn’t expect you to be perfect, He just expects you to be obedient. Is He calling you to do something? Stop hesitating because of fear or doubt and step outside of your comfort zone. The first step is the hardest, so sometimes just getting started is the biggest obstacle. We sometimes hold ourselves back from starting because we don’t have it all figured out, but we don’t have to. God has a plan and He doesn’t always reveal the big picture to us. We just have to be obedient and take one step at a time, trusting in Him with each step.

Many of you know we launched Shine Your Light just a few months ago in February 2015. What you may not know is that we began thinking about it, praying about it, and working on it in September of 2014. We could have taken even more time to figure things out, to perfect our craft, to plan better and longer. But ultimately, our biggest fear was taking the first step. We’ve already learned so many things since our launch date and we’re constantly making changes to improve Shine Your Light. But all of that is only possible because we just took a leap of faith and started.

What if you lose the talents you don’t use? What if you resist the Holy Spirit’s calling for too long and God moves on to use someone who is more willing? He doesn’t need perfection from you, he needs willingness. Willingness to have the faith in Him to step outside of your comfort zone and know that He will equip you with what you need to fulfill that role. If you feel called to do something, we encourage you to just say yes. Don’t wait for the opportunity to pass you by. Just start.

25 prompts to spark creativity May 01, 2015 10:57

Putting pressure on yourself to be creative can make it impossible to produce anything.  You pressure yourself to make something good, to make something valuable, or to make something better than your last thing.  The pressure hinders your creativity.  To encourage creativity, we actually need to create constraints.  To think outside of the box, we must first start with a box to think outside of.  If you've been giving into the pressure to create, or you're just too overwhelmed to know where to start, I have created a small list of 25 prompts to spark your creativity.  Each prompt creates a box, a set of constraints.  To paint something, you must use paint, not pens or pencils.  To add a plant to your workspace, you must determine what type of plant, what type of container, and it's placement, but it must be a plant and it must be a new addition.  To photograph a series, you must create a theme and use a camera as your tool of execution.  I am giving you a box, now the creativity part is up to you.

10 verses about prayer April 22, 2015 09:00

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 // Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 4:6 // Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.

Mark 11:24-25 // Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.  And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive them, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins.

Ephesians 6:18 // And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests.  With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord's people.

1 John 5:14 // This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.

James 4:3 // When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.

Matthew 6:5-6 // "And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others.  Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.  But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen.  Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

Luke 6:27-28 // But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.

James 1:6 // But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.

Romans 12:12 // Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.

discharge + waterbase inks April 17, 2015 15:21

Here at Shine Your Light, all our tees are printed with discharge and waterbase ink. You might be wondering what that means. We could describe it in length from a technical side, but we thought we should spare you those details and just tell you what discharge and waterbase ink means for your t-shirts.

WHAT ARE DISCHARGE + WATERBASE INKS

First, you should know that discharge and waterbase ink are almost the same thing. In fact, all discharge ink is waterbase (water based) although not all waterbase ink is discharge ink. Kind of like how all squares are rectangles but not all rectangles are squares. But that’s not important. The main thing you can take away from it is that if you see a print on a light colored shirt, it’s probably waterbase ink, and if you see a print on a dark colored shirt, it’s probably discharge ink. What’s important for you is the feel of these inks, and that’s the best part.

WHY WE THINK DISCHARGE + WATERBASE INKS ARE AWESOME

We choose to use discharge and waterbase inks because these special ink types become a part of the t-shirt material (unlike plastisol ink, which sits on top of the fabric). The discharge and waterbase ink soak into the t-shirt material, so they are one and the same. This means the design is the t-shirt and you won’t be able to feel a difference. There will be a slight feel to it until after the first wash, but from there on you won’t be able to feel the ink. The design will never crack or peel, the way designs printed with plastisol ink sometimes can. Not to mention, it’s just so much more comfortable when the design is part of the shirt and even stretches with the shirt fabric.

Sometimes, this means the ink will appear slightly faded and continue to fade as the shirt is washed over and over again. That kinda makes us happy. We love the vintage, faded look of a good and worn tee and if you’re one of our customers, you probably appreciate that, too.

Comfort is one of our top priorities and we feel that discharge and waterbase inks are the best possible ink choice. No one wants to wear clothing that’s uncomfortable, so we want to provide you with comfortable clothing that is also well designed and also spreads a positive message. That’s what matters to us.

10 verses about friendship April 10, 2015 09:00

Romans 12:10 // Be devoted to one another in brotherly love.  Honor one another above yourselves.

Proverbs 27:17 // As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.

John 15:13 // My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.  Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.  You are my friends if you do what I command.  I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master's business.  Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.

Proverbs 18:24 // A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 // Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor:  If either of them falls down, one can help the other up.  But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up.

Proverbs 12:26 // A righteous man is cautious in friendship, but the way of the wicked leads them astray.

Ephesians 4:29-32 // Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.  And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.  Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice.  Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.

Proverbs 22:24-25 // Do not make friends with a hot-tempered man, do not associate with one easily angered, or you may learn his ways and get yourself ensnared.

Luke 6:31 // Do to others as you would have them do to you.

Galatians 5:14 // Carry each others' burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.

why t-shirts? April 04, 2015 09:33

Ever since we launched Shine Your Light, we've been asked a ton of questions about how we came up with the idea and why we chose t-shirts. There is entirely too long story about how God brought this journey into our lives, but we're thinking maybe we should share it in video form one day because it would be a long read. For now, we just want to share with you why we chose t-shirts.

I had been hand-lettering for a few months, not sure where it would lead. I thought about having some of the artwork printed as wall art. But the more I lettered, the more I began to realize I could eventually cover every inch of our house with these pieces of artwork because every piece meant something.

I've always had a passion for fashion so it wasn't long before I started thinking I could put these lettering pieces on t-shirts rather than art prints. My collection could be much bigger this way, and I could change things out based on what inspired me each specific day.

Our mission is to use these positive messages and scriptures to spread the Gospel. T-shirts are worn everywhere, and not just kept in your house, so what better way to allow the message to spread? We hope that these t-shirts are conversation starters. We hope these t-shirts provide encouragement to you and spark a sense of curiosity for those that don't fully understand the Gospel or have never heard it. These t-shirts are messages about God that can go out into the entire world, and you are the messenger.

Every time you wear a positive message it's a chance to inspire or encourage someone else, to spark hard and meaningful conversations, and to even encourage or remind yourself what it means to live a life with Christ every day. If the clothing you wear is an expression of yourself, then clothe yourself in positive messages and scriptures. Boldly declare your faith in front of everyone.

So, we took a  leap of faith and decided to launch a t-shirt company trusting that God can use even a simple t-shirt to further His kingdom and impact lives. We are so thankful to be a part of this and we hope you are too. We want to create more than just an awesome t-shirt brand, we want to gather a community of believers that have a desire to be messengers to this world, and to shine the light of Christ that lives within them.

Blessings, Jess.

what does it mean to be salt? March 06, 2015 10:30

Just as we are called the light of the world, we are also called the salt of the earth.  In Matthew 5:13 Jesus says, "You are the salt of the earth.  But if salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot."  So what does it mean to be salt?

Salt had two main purposes.  It was used to preserve food, especially meat, that would spoil without refrigeration.  Christians are to be preservatives of the world, preserving it from the darkness of an ungodly society.  We must also preserve the difference between the Christian and the world so that we do not blur the distinction through choices made out of convenience, comfort, or disregard for obedience to Christ.

Salt was and still is used to enhance the flavor of food.  Likewise, believers in Christ should enhance the flavor of life.  Living a life with Christ will influence the world for good.  We are to be the peacemakers, the comforters, the givers, the ministers, and the love of God.  We are the body of Christ and we can have a positive impact on this world just by living in obedience to him.

Matthew 5:13 also warns us of losing our saltiness.  Our role as salt of the earth can be hindered by the choices we make that compromise for what is comfortable and convenient rather than what truly pleases God.  We must not blur the distinction.  As salt and light, our life should be an obvious, credible witness of God.  If we remain humble and walk in obedience with Christ, we will remain salt and light of the world.  But when we step away from that lifestyle we blur the lines and hinder our testimony.  Mark 9:50 reminds us to "Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with one another."

We have to remain focused on Christ to remain as salt of the earth and light of the world.

what does it mean to be light? February 27, 2015 09:00

Shine Your Light is founded on the verses from Matthew chapter 5:14-16 which calls believers the light of the world and instructs us to shine our light before others so that they may see our good deeds and glorify God.  When we follow Christ, we have His light within us, which we are to make evident to others by the good deeds we do in faith and through the power of the Holy Spirit.  As we dug deeper into this, we realized God has a lot to say about light in the Bible.

GOD IS LIGHT

1 John 1:5 says "This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all."  God is the source of our light because God is light.  Light is things that are good and righteous, the opposite of evil.  Light exposes evil and is the opposite of darkness.  Darkness is the absence of light.  In John chapter 8 verse 12, Jesus says "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."  So we know that because we follow Christ, and because God then lives in us, we will always have light.

WE ARE TO WALK IN LIGHT

In the Bible, walk is often referred to as a lifestyle and a growing progress.  To "walk in light" as we are called to do in 1 John 1:7, means to grow and mature in holiness and in faith as we follow Jesus.  Our lifestyle, or our walk, should be an obvious witness to the world.  We should live a faithful, God-honoring, trustworthy, earnest, and honest life.  The world should look at us and see Christ.

Living in light means repenting from our sins because if we walk in light, we cannot walk in darkness, and the light casts out sin to the shadows.  And just as we need physical light to see where we are physically walking, we need Spiritual light, Jesus, to see where we are spiritually walking.

SHINE YOUR LIGHT

Shining your light means following Christ, walking in light, living in light, and witnessing to others so that they may see the light.  1 Peter 3:15 reminds us, "always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have."  We should not cover up our light, just as you do not hide a lamp under a bowl (Matthew 5:15), but we should make it obvious for the world to see the light and benefit from it so that they too can leave the darkness and come into the light.

Shine Your Light believes we should live God-filled lives loving others, stepping out in faith, and sharing the Gospel.

15 verses about light February 20, 2015 09:00

You are the light of the world.  A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.  Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl.  Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.  In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.  Matthew 5:14-16

We now have this light shining in our hearts, but we ourselves are like fragile clay jars containing this great treasure.  This makes it clear that our great power is from God, not from ourselves.  1 Corinthians 4:7

When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."  John 8:12

For God, who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God's glory displayed in the face of Christ.  2 Corinthians 4:6

Your word is a lamp to my feet.  And a light to my path.  Psalms 119:105

For you were once in darkness, but now you are light in the Lord.  Live as children of light (for the fruit of light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) and find out what pleases the Lord.  Ephesians 5:8-10

"While I am in the world, I am the light of the world."  John 9:5

God is light; in him there is no darkness at all.  If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth.  But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.  1 John 1:5b-7

Then Jesus told them, "You are going to have the light just a little while longer.  Walk while you have the light, before darkness overtakes you.  The man who walks in the dark does not know where he is going.  Put your trust in the light while you have it, so that you may become sons of light."  When he had finished speaking, Jesus left and hid himself from them.  Even after Jesus had done all these miraculous signs in their presence, they still would not believe him.  John 12:35-37

For this is what the Lord has commanded us: "I have made you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth."  Acts 13:47

The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God give it light, and the Lamb is its lamp.  Revelation 21:12

The Lord is my light and my salvation -- whom shall I fear?  Psalm 27:1

Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates his brother is still in the darkness.  Whoever loves his brother lives in the light, and there is nothing in him to make him stumble.  But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness and walks around in the darkness; he does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded him.  1 John 2:9-11

I saw that wisdom is better than folly, just as light is better than darkness.  Ecclesiastes 2:13

Your eye is the lamp of your body.  When your eyes are good, your whole body is full of light.  But when they are bad, your body also is full of darkness.  See to it, then, that the light within you is not darkness.  Luke 11:34-35
